Our latest blog is by Ali who works in our marketing team who has been dreaming of the perfect utility room.
“As soon as autumn comes around and the Wellies go on, mud management becomes a big issue in our house. I am lucky to have a small utility room so can at least try to herd mucky kids and dogs into one place. It’s a high traffic area and always looks and feels a bit out of control, mainly because it is!
Shoes are never ever in pairs and schoolbags are dropped in the middle of the floor oozing smelly sports gear. Cupboards have become a holding pen for unwanted presents, kitchen stuff we never use and excess wine. And, for a small animal, the dog takes up a lot of valuable real estate and has a really odd habit of trying to cover his food bowl with football boots.
So this blog is devoted to getting a bit of order into the utility area. Most of us are realistic enough to know we will never achieve magazine perfection but taking some small steps will make a big difference.
First up is to have a clear out – sell or recycle anything you don’t use. Then take a long hard look at your storage. Think about getting some clear boxes or storage tins to contain smaller items on your shelves. Shelf space will be used more efficiently and it’s easier to find things that are well-ordered. Consider getting some practical things to manage laundry; a decent laundry basket or perhaps one of the lovely Sophie Allport peg bags.
If you have a cat or dog, store their dry food in a separate tin – it looks neater and will avoid food spillage. Sophie Allport’s Purrfect Cat Treat Tin works just as well for dogs. A matching bowl or bed will complete the picture of the perfectly behaved pet.
As a finishing touch, why not get a boot bag for your muddy Wellies or walking boots. It’s a simple but brilliant idea which will keep your house (and car) mud free – and it’s going top of my Christmas list!”
