How to choose the best freezer

Freezer buying guide

Are you looking for a new freezer? Not sure which one is best? Whether you’re looking for an under-counter freezer or a tall larder fridge, we’ve got all the advice you need to help you choose the perfect freezer to suit your home and budget. This guide provides an overview of some of the key points to think about when buying a new freezer.

Types of freezers

The type of freezer you need will depend on the space you have and the appliances you already own (unless you are having a completely new kitchen). There are three main types of freezer – upright tall freezers, under-counter freezers and chest freezers.

Upright, tall freezers

An upright freezer is ideal if you require plenty of storage but are short on floor space. They come in a range of measurements but typically stand between head and shoulder height. Upright freezers offer plenty of room for everything you need and are great for kitchens, utility rooms and garages.

Under-counter freezers

Under-counter freezers are designed to sit beneath your kitchen worktop, making them ideal for smaller kitchens. The capacity is surprisingly large, allowing you to store plenty of frozen items. They’re designed to give clever storage options and you can choose size, capacity and features to suit your budget.

Chest freezers

Chest freezers have a huge amount of space, although the top-opening lid means they are unsuitable for under the counter. They are great for utility rooms or garages and provide enough space for a large family or extra space for parties. If you do plan to store your chest freezer in a garage or outbuilding, be sure to check the appliance can withstand cooler temperatures before purchasing.

Short on space?

Then you might want to consider a fridge freezer. Fridge freezers come in a range of styles, colours and capacities to suit your needs and kitchen space. View our range of fridge freezers on our website or visit our fridge freezer buyers guide for more information.

Integrated or freestanding?

Freestanding freezers come in all shapes and sizes. Undercounter freestanding freezers are compact and fit neatly under your kitchen worktop, while tall, upright models can hold more items and are ideal for larger families. Freestanding freezers can be positioned anywhere within reach of a plug socket, although bear in mind that bulkier chest freezers can take up a lot of floor space.

Integrated under-counter freezers are fitted behind a cupboard door, meaning they’re completely hidden from view. This makes them a great choice if you want to achieve a sleek, seamless look in your kitchen. Bear in mind that you may need a specialist to instal an integrated freezer as the cupboard panel fits on the front of the appliance.

Common freezer features explained

Frost-free

Frost-free technology stops ice from forming inside your freezer by using a fan to keep the cool air constantly moving around. With no manual defrosting required, frost-free freezers will save you valuable time and make family life that little bit easier.

Interior light

An interior light helps you to see what’s in the freezer more easily. This will hopefully make it quicker to find what you are looking for and so the freezer door won’t be open as long which saves energy.

Temperature warning

The temperature warning will let you know when the conditions in your freezer are too warm, which should help to prevent food from going off.

Fast freeze

The fast freeze setting is great for when you want something to freeze quickly. This is a setting that will rapidly lower the temperature to get your food back to the right condition and lock in nutrients.

Flexible storage options

Different models will have different energy efficiency ratings. The more efficient the model you choose, the more money you could save on your energy bills. Please bear in mind that highly energy-efficient appliances tend to have a smaller capacity.
