How to choose the best washer dryer

Washer Dryers Buyers Guide

A great space-saving solution, washer dryers combine the features of a washing machine and tumble dryer in one handy appliance. But with so many factors to consider, buying a washer dryer can feel a bit overwhelming.

From capacity to spin speed, we’ll guide you through everything you need to know to find the most suitable washer dryer for your home and lifestyle.

Choosing a washer dryer: freestanding vs integrated

There are two main types of washer dryers – freestanding and integrated.

Freestanding washer dryers

A freestanding washer dryer can be placed in most areas of your house, as long as you have a plug socket, water supply and drain in the proximity. This flexibility makes them a very popular choice. Washer dryers have a standard width of between 595-600mm, making them easier to replace should you need to.

Integrated washer dryers

An integrated washer dryer sits discreetly behind a cupboard door and is a great option if you want to achieve a clutter-free, seamless look. Like a freestanding washer dryer, they also need to be placed near a socket, water supply and drain. Integrated washer dryers tend to have a smaller capacity than freestanding models and are typically more expensive to buy.

Common washer dryer features explained

Capacity

The capacity of a washer dryer refers to how much laundry you can fit in the drum. Washing capacities vary from 5kg up to 10kg, while drying capacities will always be slightly less and typically range from 4kg to 7kg. As a guide, a washer dryer with an 8kg washing capacity can wash around 40 t-shirts and dry 6kg of laundry (approximately 30 t-shirts).

Spin speed

Spin speeds usually range from 1200 to 1600 rpm. Machines with a higher rpm remove more water from your clothes during the spin cycle, which can help to speed up drying times. You can manually alter the rpm to suit different types of fabrics.

Sensor technology

Some washer dryers are equipped with sensor technology. This is where the machine can automatically detect the weight of the laundry and adjust the programme settings accordingly.

Energy ratings

The energy rating shows how much energy the washer dryer uses and how energy-efficient it is. It is important to think about this as it may affect the running cost of the machine as well as the environmental impact. Look out for models with an eco wash function, as this can reduce energy usage by up to 60%.

Steam wash

A steam wash delivers a more intensive clean as the steam can get deeper into the fabric and work harder to remove dirt. Steam cycles also use less water, which can save you money on your energy bills.

Noise

The noise level of a washer-dryer may be a consideration, depending on where you keep your machine. If your machine is situated in an open plan living space, you might want to opt for a model with a lower decibel rating. As a guide, 40dB is similar to the noise in a public library, whereas 80db is more like the noise of a ringing phone.

Dimensions

Make sure you measure the available space you have carefully. Keep in mind that you will need some clearance space for pipes etc. And don’t forget to check the pathway for installing your washer dryer works too. Are the doors wide enough for the washer dryer to pass through?
