How to choose the best mirror for your home

Mirror buyers guide

There’s a lot to consider when buying a new mirror. There are so many different styles, shapes and sizes to choose from. As well as being practical and functional, a mirror is a great way to add light into a room and create the illusion of more space. It’s worth doing a little research first before you invest, so read on to find the fairest of them all.

What are the different types of mirror?

Wall-mounted

Wall-mounted mirrors are designed to be hung on the wall and can come in a range of different shapes and sizes to suit any room and purpose.

Full-length / dressing mirrors

Full-length mirrors / dressing mirrors are usually long and narrow. They’re designed to give you a full-length reflection. These can be hung on the wall or they might be freestanding. Sizes vary, but a typical full-length dressing mirror usually measures 40 x 140cm.

Leaner / freestanding mirrors

Leaner / freestanding mirrors don’t need to be wall-mounted and are usually full-length. A large leaner mirror typically measures 80 x 180cm.

Choosing the right size mirror

Choosing the right size mirror is important. Think about the size of your room and where you want to put your mirror before buying it. Use a paper template to help you map out the position. You’ll also need to check you have enough floor space if you’re considering buying a freestanding mirror.

A good tip is to look for a mirror that is around two-thirds of the size of the furniture it’s hanging above.

Finding the right mirror for different spaces in the house

Hallway

A mirror in the hallway can make a small area seem bigger and brighter by reflecting light around the space. It’s also handy for those last-minute appearance checks before you walk out the door. A rectangular mirror usually works well in a hallway as it complements the proportions of the space.

Living room

Hanging a mirror in your living room is a great way to add interest to a blank wall. When positioned carefully, it can also create the illusion of more space, making it particularly useful for small living rooms.

Living room mirrors are usually more decorative so don’t be afraid to opt for something with a bolder frame to make a statement. Whether it’s a mirror over the fireplace or above the sofa, a well-chosen mirror can transform the look of a room.

Bedroom

Bedroom mirrors are important for checking our appearance, so the obvious option for the bedroom is a full-length mirror. If you’re limited on space, a full-length wall-mounted mirror is an ideal option. However, if you have a little more floor space, a full length leaner mirror can look great and really enhance the look of your room. This Carved Louis Leaner Mirror in silver is a really popular choice for a bedroom.

Bathroom

Function is key when choosing a mirror for the bathroom. Whether you’re applying make-up or shaving, having a mirror with the right lighting makes getting ready a lot easier.

Bathroom mirrors come in a variety of styles and shapes including round, rectangular, square and oval. Rectangular mirrors are one of the most popular options, while round mirrors are ideal if you want to create a softer, more relaxed vibe.

Mirror styles and materials

Mirror frames come in a wide range of materials including wood, metal and glass. The style and material of the frame can influence the entire aesthetic of a room, so it’s important to think carefully about the look you want to achieve.

Metal frames are perfect if you want to create an industrial look, while glass-framed mirrors will add a contemporary feel to your home. Mirrors with a dark stain and are ideally suited to traditional interiors. Love the Scandi look? Opt for a light-coloured wood to bring an understated and natural touch to your space.

How to hang a mirror

Hanging your new mirror can take a bit of planning and patience but the results are worth it.

Make sure you have all the right screws and wall fixings before you start. Think about the type of wall you are hanging your mirror on and also the weight of the mirror. Plaster or drywall isn’t usually strong enough to support a heavy wall mirror, so make sure any screws or hooks are attached to wooden beams behind the plaster.

For a freestanding mirror that doesn’t need hanging, make sure both the wall and the floor is flat enough for it to lean against.
