How to choose the best mattress

Mattress buyers guide

Did you know, the average person spends a third of their life sleeping? Finding a good mattress is an important decision as it can affect the quality of your sleep and your overall wellbeing. But with so many mattresses on the market, choosing the perfect one can be confusing. To help you get started, here’s a guide to the key points to consider when buying your new mattress.

What are the different types of mattresses?

Mattresses have come a long way over recent years, and there are now various options available. Some of the most common types of mattresses are outlined below.

Open spring

A traditional spring mattress, also known as an open spring mattress, consists of interconnected high tensile metal coils. Available in a variety of sizes and tensions, they tend to be more affordable than other types of mattresses. A standard double open spring mattress typically contains around 300 springs, which move together as one unit.

Pocket spring

A pocket spring mattress contains individual springs that are sewn into their own ‘pocket’ of fabric. Unlike open spring mattresses, the coils in a pocket sprung mattress can move independently of one another. This means you are less likely to disturb your partner if you toss and turn during the night. Pocket sprung mattresses usually have a much higher coil count than open spring varieties, thus providing greater support.

Foam and memory foam

As the name suggests, memory foam mattresses contain a layer of memory foam that gently moulds to the shape of your body. Made from polyurethane (or viscoelastic), they offer excellent support and pressure point relief. This makes them ideal for people who suffer from a bad back, as they help to keep your spine aligned when sleeping.

Choosing the right mattress for you

Finding your perfect mattress will depend on various factors including size, tension, fabric type and budget. Our experienced team is here to help you choose the best option for your needs.

Mattress size

Mattresses come in a range of sizes including single, small double, double, king size and super king. You’ll need to measure the length and width of your mattress to ensure it matches your bed frame. This may seem obvious but it’s a common mistake people make.

The size of mattress and bed frame you choose will also be determined by the space you have available and how many people it’s catering for. The smallest size we offer is a single, which is great for one child or one adult. The largest we offer is a super king, which is perfect for a couple or someone who likes to have a lot of space and stretch out when they are sleeping.

Tension guide

Mattress tensions are usually described as soft, medium or firm. Which one you choose is very much down to personal preference.

Some people prefer the cosy cushioning of a softer mattress, whereas others favour a firmer mattress with more tension. Your sleeping position, weight and any health conditions may also affect which level of tension or comfort grade is the most suitable. If in doubt, please speak to a member of the team for advice.

Fabric type

Mattresses also come in a range of different fabrics. This may be an important consideration if you have any allergies. Some of our mattresses are even made with recyclable materials and are more environmentally friendly.

The type of fabric and filling can also affect how the mattress regulates heat. Memory foam mattresses, for example, are great insulators but they can get quite warm. If you are someone who gets hot at night then you may want to factor this in when searching for your perfect mattress.

When to replace your mattress

The Sleep Council recommends that you replace your mattress every 7 years, although in reality, people often leave it longer than this.

However, a poor quality mattress can lead to a raft of sleep and health problems, so it’s important to keep an eye out for other warning signs that it’s time for a replacement.

If you are waking up with aches and pains or are struggling to get comfortable at night, then it might be worth investing in a new mattress. Is your current mattress beginning to sag? Do you sleep better on other mattresses away from your home, like at a hotel? These are all signs that it’s time to replace your mattress.

Caring for your mattress

Here are a few simple tips to keep your mattress in great condition for years.

Leave it uncovered for a few hours to air

When you remove your new mattress from its packaging, leave it uncovered for a few hours to allow it to air. This will help to keep your mattress smelling fresh before you put the bedding on.

Allow time for your body to adjust

Upgrading your mattress can be a big change for your body so make sure you allow a bit of time for your body to adjust to the new level of comfort and support.

Cleaning your mattress

In general, you will not need to clean your mattress, but if you do, avoid using detergents or chemicals as this may damage the fabric. You can use a damp cloth with water for any light cleaning.

Rotate your mattress regularly

It’s good practice to rotate your mattress on a regular basis to keep it level and ensure even wear. Some mattresses are designed not to be rotated so make sure you read the label first.
